Toyama
Easy trams, Alps views and Toyama Bay seafood, in a quiet gateway to the Japan Alps.
Why We’re Planning to Go
Toyama will be new to us. It’s less expensive than Kanazawa and just 20 minutes away by Shinkansen, and few international visitors stay long. That’s a big part of the appeal: a real working city with the Tateyama mountains rising behind it, and no crowds.
It’s built for getting around without a car. A compact center and a frequent tram network link Toyama Station with the castle, the glass museum, the canal park and the old port district of Iwase. Rent is also lower than in Kanazawa. It’s also the gateway to some of Japan’s great mountain trips, including the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route and the Kurobe Gorge trolley train.
The photo above shows the Owara Kaze no Bon festival in Yatsuo, a hillside district of Toyama City. Every September 1 to 3, dancers in woven straw hats move slowly through the lantern-lit streets. We’ll update this page with what we learn and spend once we’ve lived here.
Quick Facts
The $3,000 Month: Toyama
Our planning estimate for two people staying four weeks in a furnished apartment. Toyama is less expensive than Kanazawa, so this month comes in about $100 under our $3,000 target.
| Category | Est. per month (two people) |
|---|---|
| Furnished apartment (monthly rental) | $1,200 |
| Food: $30 a day for two (lunches out, plus bento, onigiri and groceries) | $900 |
| Local transport (trams and buses) | $80 |
| Phone and data | $50 |
| Museums, canal cruise and activities | $120 |
| Day trips (4–5, including one mountain trip) | $450 |
| Buffer for surprises | $100 |
| Estimated total | $2,900 |
These are pre-trip estimates based on published cost-of-living data, not our actual spending yet. A couple’s general living costs in Toyama run about $1,880 a month with a regular long-term lease. Furnished monthly rentals cost more, but they’re the practical choice for a stay of a few weeks. Rent runs about $100 a month less than in Kanazawa, and the compact center keeps transport costs low. The day-trip line is still a bit higher, because a trip up the Alpine Route costs about ¥10,000 per person. We’ll post our real numbers after we’ve lived here.
Where to Stay
Near Toyama Station
The most practical base. The Shinkansen, every tram line, and the trains toward the mountains all leave from here. The Toyamarché food market inside the station makes lunch easy.
Downtown (Sogawa and Grand Plaza)
The shopping and dining center, around the Sogawa arcade and the department stores. It’s walking distance to the Glass Art Museum and Toyama Castle, and on the tram loop back to the station.
How We’ll Eat Well for Less
Our food budget is $30 a day for the two of us. As in Kanazawa, lunch is our main meal out, and evenings are simple: bento, onigiri and supermarket meals.
Lunch: our main meal out
- White shrimp tempura bowl: shiroebi are tiny sweet shrimp from Toyama Bay. At Shiroebi-tei in the station’s Toyamarché, a tempura bowl is about ¥1,690.
- Conveyor-belt sushi at the station: Sushi Tama serves local fish at belt-sushi prices. Go at 11 a.m. to beat the line.
- Soba: buckwheat noodle shops serve filling lunches for about ¥1,000–2,000.
Local ramen where locals eat
- Toyama Black ramen: the city’s own style, with a jet-black soy broth that’s very salty and peppery. Order a side bowl of rice with it.
- Nishicho Taiki: the classic Toyama Black shop. A bowl is about ¥1,000, cash only, and there’s a branch in the station.
- Menya Iroha: opposite the station, open every day until 9:45 p.m. A Toyama Black bowl with egg is about ¥870.
Evenings: bento, onigiri and masuzushi
- Masuzushi: Toyama’s famous pressed trout sushi in a round bamboo-leaf box. A box costs about ¥1,200–1,800, keeps about a day, and makes an easy dinner.
- Supermarket bento: complete boxed meals. Many supermarkets mark them down in the early evening.
- Onigiri and sandwiches from convenience stores (konbini): cheap, fresh and quick.
Seafood: splurge smart
- A Toyama Bay sushi set, local fish chosen by the chef, runs about ¥3,500–5,000. Save it for a special lunch.
- Seasons: firefly squid March–May, white shrimp April–November, winter yellowtail November–February.
- White shrimp catches have been poor since the January 2024 earthquake, so ask what’s fresh that day.
Prices are approximate pre-trip figures in yen. We’ll update them with what we actually paid.
What to Do Slowly
- Visit the Toyama Glass Art Museum, inside a Kengo Kuma building of glass and cedar. It includes a permanent Dale Chihuly installation, and the permanent collection costs just ¥200.
- Have coffee by the water at Fugan Canal Kansui Park, home to a Starbucks often called the most beautiful in the world. It’s about a 10-minute walk from the station.
- Take the canal boat from Kansui Park to the old port of Iwase (about ¥2,500, including a tram ticket back; late March to November).
- Wander Iwase’s merchant-house streets, built on the old Kitamae shipping trade, and stop for a tasting at the Masuda sake brewery.
- Walk Toyama Castle Park, then go up to the free rooftop garden at the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design for views of the Tateyama range.
- In spring, take the short boat ride along the Matsukawa River under the cherry trees lining the old castle moat.
Practical Notes
- Trams: rides are ¥240 and run every 5–15 minutes, and Suica and other IC cards work. A Tram & Bus One-Day Pass costs about ¥750. Foreign visitors staying at participating hotels can ask the front desk for free tram tickets.
- Rail passes: the Japan Rail Pass covers the Shinkansen but not the city trams or the local Toyama Chiho Railway trains toward the mountains.
- Weather: Toyama gets real winter snow, and the mountain routes close from December to mid-April.
- Festival timing: Owara Kaze no Bon (September 1–3) draws about 200,000 visitors. Book any stay around those dates far in advance.
Day Trips We’re Considering
- Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route: cable cars and buses climb to Murodo at 2,450 meters, with snow walls in spring and fall color from September. The 2026 season runs April 15 to November 30. A round trip from Dentetsu Toyama to Murodo is ¥10,220 per person, so this is our splurge trip.
- Kurobe Gorge trolley train: an open-air train runs 80 minutes up Japan’s deepest gorge from Unazuki Onsen. The full line reopened October 1, 2026, after earthquake repairs. A round trip is ¥4,960 per person, and the line closes for winter after November.
- Yatsuo: the hillside old town from our photo, with stone-paved streets of traditional houses, a quiet visit outside festival days.
- Kanazawa: 20 minutes away by Shinkansen, for gardens, teahouses and Omicho Market.
- Shirakawa-go: the thatched-roof village is reachable by highway bus from Toyama, at ¥2,400 each way.
